The Peanut Island / Snook Islands Environmental Restoration Project included excavation of over 1.3 million cubic yards of material, 53,000 tons of armor stone placement, construction of a dredged material containment facility, wier structures, boardwalks, marine habitat, boat docks, roads, lighting, irrigation systems, bridges, removal of all non-native vegetation, installation of native vegetation, mangrove protection, dredging, breakwater construction, 100 acres of underwater habitat creation and improvement. The Peanut Island Project (link is external) was slated by engineers to have a three-year duration, but was finished ahead of schedule in spite of the worst hurricane season in Florida’s recorded history.
